Effect of Body Image Distortion on Mental Health in Adolescents
Yun Hyun-Jung

Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of body image distortion on mental health in adolescents.

Method: Using statistics from 13th (2017) Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey, complex samples logistic regression was conducted. The study sample comprised 49,180 adolescents.

Results: The prevalence of subjects with body image distortion was 50.5% in this study. Gender, grade, school type, school achievement, and economic status were significantly different among the groups. After controlling general characteristics, body image distortion was significantly related to stress, depression, and suicidal ideation. That is, compared to adolescents without body image distortion, those with body image distortion showed significantly higher risk for having stress, depression, and suicidal ideation.

Conclusions: Findings indicate that interventions focusing on body image distortion to prevent poor mental health should be developed to help adolescents.
